Creating the Future: Art Meets Technology
- From Tacit knowledge to Explicit knowledge -
Date: December 8, 2024
Time: 14:30 - 15:20
Abstract:
Throughout my research career, I have led and observed numerous research activities as the president of several academic societies, underscoring the essential role of art, design, and technology in enriching human society.
In this keynote, I will present my 50-year journey in computer graphics (CG) research, showcasing the development of innovative rendering and representation methods, as well as the profound impact of technology on art and design. A central focus of my work has been the transformation of tacit knowledge (insights gained through experience) into explicit knowledge (knowledge that can be systematically shared). This approach has propelled the advancement of CG technologies by bridging the intuitive expertise of engineers and artists with structured, shareable insights.
The talk will cover five key areas of my CG research: Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR), sketch modeling, kansei information (a Japanese term related to sensory perception and sensibility), CG animation, and content production technologies. Beginning with NPR research in 1973, my journey evolved into developing tools for interactive sketch modeling, design support systems, and motion-enhancing techniques such as Motion Filter and Cartoon Blur. In recent years, the focus of my research has shifted towards digital content production, particularly in character creation, mise-en-scène, and scenario writing.
Through this talk, I will illustrate how the convergence of art and technology, combined with the systematic transformation of knowledge, has led to pioneering advancements in the field of computer graphics.

Art Paper (Peer-reviewed)
Art Papers are more artistically-oriented papers than Technical Papers. You can present any type of artwork, as long as digital technologies are used in it. If you produced a cutting-edge digital art such as a computer animation and an interactive art, Art Papers would be a great showcase at an oral presentation. You can share your ideas between hundreds of artists and researchers, and it may evoke a synergistic effect in the Asian digital art community. You should describe an artistic motivation, a background of your artwork, and how digital technologies are involved in your work, and so on.
